Simple Ways to Enjoy Fresh Chestnuts

If the only time chestnuts make an appearance in your kitchen is around the holidays, you're missing out.

Fresh chestnuts have a mildly sweet, earthy flavor that works in everything from breakfast to dinner. And nutritionally, they're quite different from the almonds, pecans and walnuts you may be used to eating. Chestnuts are naturally low in fat, provide fiber and vitamin C, and have a satisfying, starchy texture that makes them surprisingly versatile in everyday cooking.

We think that makes a pretty good argument for giving fresh chestnuts a little more room in your refrigerator.

What Makes Chestnuts Different from Other Nuts?

Chestnuts are unusual in the nut world. They contain considerably less fat than most tree nuts and get much of their energy from complex carbohydrates. They're also a source of fiber and provide nutrients including vitamin C, potassium, copper, manganese, vitamin B6 and folate. Chestnuts are naturally gluten-free, too.

A serving of 10 roasted chestnuts provides roughly 15% of the Daily Value for fiber and 24% for vitamin C. Chestnuts also contain naturally occurring plant compounds, including polyphenols such as gallic and ellagic acids.

But we're chestnut growers, not nutritionists. The reason we really think you should eat more of them is they taste good.

Once they're cooked and peeled, chestnuts have a soft texture and subtle sweetness that can move easily between savory and sweet dishes. Here are a few uncomplicated ways to put them to work.

Add Chestnuts to Roasted Vegetables

This might be one of the easiest ways to start cooking with chestnuts.

Roast Brussels sprouts, carrots, sweet potatoes or winter squash as you normally would. During the last few minutes, toss in some roughly chopped cooked chestnuts. They add a slightly sweet, nutty flavor and a soft contrast to the caramelized vegetables.

A little olive oil, salt and pepper may be all you need.

Try Chestnuts in Mashed Potatoes

For something a little different, add cooked chestnuts to your next batch of mashed potatoes.

Boil or roast and peel the chestnuts, then purée or mash a handful along with your potatoes. Their naturally creamy, starchy texture blends beautifully with potatoes and adds a subtle sweetness without overwhelming the dish.

It's an easy introduction to chestnuts for someone who has never cooked with them before.

Put Them on Your Morning Oatmeal

Chestnuts for breakfast? Absolutely.

Chop cooked chestnuts and scatter them over warm oatmeal with apples or pears, cinnamon and a drizzle of honey. Chestnuts aren't as oily or crunchy as most nuts, so think of them more as a tender, slightly sweet topping.

And, of course, we're partial to finishing the bowl with a little Diamond R Ranch honey.

Toss Chestnuts Into Rice, Stuffing or Grain Bowls

Chestnuts are an easy addition to rice, wild rice, quinoa and other grain dishes.

Try chopped chestnuts with wild rice, mushrooms and herbs for a savory side dish. Add them to your favorite stuffing recipe, or simply toss some into a grain bowl with roasted vegetables.

You don't necessarily need a special chestnut recipe. Once they're cooked, you can experiment with adding them to dishes you already make.

Add Chestnuts to a Fall Salad

The natural sweetness of fresh chestnuts pairs especially well with apples, pears, dried cranberries and hearty greens.

Try a salad with greens, sliced apple, chopped cooked chestnuts and a simple vinaigrette. Add goat cheese or another favorite cheese if you'd like.

It's a particularly nice way to use leftover roasted or boiled chestnuts the next day.

Keep Dessert Very Simple

Chestnuts don't need much help here.

Warm some peeled, cooked chestnuts and drizzle them with honey. Add cinnamon if you like, or serve them alongside vanilla ice cream.

That's it.

Sometimes the simplest way to appreciate the unique flavor of a fresh chestnut is not to bury it beneath a complicated recipe.

One Bag of Fresh Chestnuts, Lots of Possibilities

If you've been searching for what to do with fresh chestnuts, our best advice is to stop thinking of them as something reserved for one special holiday recipe.

Boil them. Roast them. Chop them. Purée them. Add them to foods you're already cooking.

Our chestnuts are harvested, hand-sorted and placed into cold storage to protect their freshness. We ship them carefully with cold packs so that our customers can enjoy fresh chestnuts while they're in season.

And if you're buying several pounds, don't feel as though you need to roast them all at once. Fresh chestnuts should be kept refrigerated, which gives you time to experiment with them throughout the season.

Kept in a mesh bag for breathability, our fresh chestnuts can last 1-3 months in the coldest part of your fridge!

Chestnut season may be short, but there are plenty of ways to enjoy it.
